We passed all inspections the first try and the homeowner was happy.
Outages just last longer in the Lake Tapps area, and this customer called us the prevent having to deal with repeated outages.
This install went with the pre-pack load center. These make for a cost effective install compared with 200 amp SE rated transfer switches.
Although cost effective, these switches are often installed incorrectly, or in some cases installers can cut corners to save time at the homeowners expense. One important code issue with these type of ATS’s is that they share neutrals. The factory provided switches must be reworked with added wires to meet code.
The breakers that share neutrals must also be put on two-pole breakers for safety.
Another important code and safety issue to consider is arc-fault breakers. They are required by the national electrical code because they stop parallel arcing faults and prevent fires. Inspectors will look for these, and good installers will put these in your new generator transfer switch if required.
